Meaning of Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice

Many physicians have sought to obtain Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice. Most chose to pursue Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice via the Previous Experience Pathway. Others chose to pursue Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice via the Standard Primary Pathway. The Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice is the pathway chosen by physicians who chose to complete the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine.

Many physicians seek to obtain board certification by the American Board of General Practice for various reasons. One reason may be to enhance credentials for hospital staff privileges. One reason may be to enhance credentials for Managed Care Organizations or insurance companies. Other physicians may seek to obtain board certification by the American Board of General Practice for personal reasons.

Some of the physicians, who have pursued Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice were physicians, who completed General Practice Residencies. (Before there were Family Practice Residencies there were General Practice Residencies.) Many years previously, there were traditional residencies in general practice. However, the persons responsible from providing the board certification in general practice, failed to provide this certification to those who had completed such residencies. The American Board of General Practice has helped with these physicians by providing them with a way to obtain board certification in the general practice of medicine by the American Board of General Practice.

Officially, the American Board of General Practice does not encourage any physician to seek Board Certification for commercial reasons. In fact, the American Board of General Practice discourages any physician from seeking board certification from the American Board of General Practice for commericial reasons. Moreover, the American Academy of General Physicians (the society that recognizes and accredits the American Board of General Practice) will not accept, for membership, any physician who is believed to be trying to obtain board certification from the American Board of General Practice for commercial reasons.

What does Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice mean? Since the American Board of General Practice is recognized by the licensed physician members of the American Academy of General Physicians as the Board that certifies excellence in the practice of general medicine, A physician, who has obtained Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice, has obtained a certification, that is recognized by the peers of such physician, which certifies excellence in the practice of general medicine. Therefore, Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice means that a physician has obtained such recognition by such physician's peers.

Essentially the meaning of Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice is recognition by peers. This should be the sole reason a physician seeks to obtain board certification by the American Board of General Practice.

A physician, who has obtained board certification by the American Board of General Practice, has been recognized by his/her peers as meeting a particular standard pertaining to his/her competency in, and performance of, the General Practice of Medicine.

If a physician is seeking board certification from the American Board of General Practice to enhance credentials for a particular hospital staff, then such physician should check with that hospital, prior to seeking such board certification, for the purpose of determing such hospital's position on the American Board of General Practice. The American Board of General Practice and the American Academy of General Physicians have observed that credentialing criteria for hospital staffs be different and change from hospital to hospital throughout the United States.

If a physician is seeking board certification from the American Board of General Practice to enhance credentials for a particular Managed Care Organization or Insurance Company (MCO/IC), then such physician should check with that MCO/IC, prior to seeking such board certification, for the purpose of determing such MCO/IC's position on the American Board of General Practice. The American Board of General Practice and the American Academy of General Physicians have observed that credentialing criteria for MCO/IC's be different and change from MCO/IC to MCO/IC throughout the United States. The American Board of General Practice and the American Academy of General Physicians have observed that credentialing criteria for a particular MCO/IC be different and change within such particular MCO/IC depending on the state in which a physician practices.

One of these governing boards is the Board of Examiners of the American Board of General Practice. The other of these governing boards is the Board of Certifiers of the American Board of General Practice. The Board of Certifiers of the American Board of General Practice specifically governs and over-sees the entire process of board certification by the American Board of General Practice.

Physicians, who sit on the Board of Certifiers of the American Board of General Practice, must each be certified themselves by a member board of the American Board of Medicial Specialties.
